Yvonne "Bonnie" Smith
In 2012 the Fruitport Education Foundation received an estate gift from the trust of Yvonne “Bonnie” Smith in memory of her grandson Eric Smith.
Bonnie was well known to the Fruitport Community, having lived in the village for over sixty years until her death in November 2011. She and her husband Bud raised six sons – Mike, Brad, Chris, Dave, Craig, and Bruce – and made priceless memories camping together in a tent every summer. She and Bud were elected king and queen during Fruitport’s Old Fashioned Days in 1994 in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary.
A woman who was content in all things, Bonnie lived her life on purpose each and every day. She deeply loved those around her, lived a responsible and frugal life, and exemplified what a woman of faith looks like through the choices she made.
Bonnie dearly loved the Fruitport community as well and was honored to serve on the village council for 20 years. She was also a familiar face at many local elections where she served as precinct worker. She sold Avon products for over 45 years, served in countless ministries with the Fruitport Congregational United Church of Christ where she was a lifelong dedicated member, and she and her husband were both very involved in the Fruitport VFW. Those who knew Bonnie adored her quick wit and her fun-loving spirit.
Not only did Bonnie give of her time and talents to the community she loved, but she also has ensured that her legacy continues through her estate gift to the Fruitport Education Foundation.
